Free databases

A real database for your project, free.

MariaDB or PostgreSQL, 50 MB each, with 2 databases on every account. Use it from a server here or from code running anywhere else.

Free databases

What every account gets

Databases

2

Per account, of either type, in any mix. They belong to your account, not to a server.

Disk each

50 MB

A hard limit. A write that would go past it fails straight away, so nothing grows into a surprise.

Engines

2

MariaDB, which speaks MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Pick one when you create the database.

Connections

5

Open at once per database. Plenty for a bot or a small app that keeps a pool.

Expires

Never

No renewals and no inactivity timer. A database stays until you delete it.

To get started

£0

No card and no trial. The same free account you would use for hosting.

How it works

From signup to connected in three steps.

  1. 1

    Create an account

The same free account as our hosting. You do not need a server to have a database.

  2. 2

    Pick MariaDB or PostgreSQL

Open Databases in your panel, name it, and choose the type. The recommended version is picked for you.

  3. 3

    Connect

Copy the host, port, username and password into your code. They work from anywhere, not only from our servers.

Which one to pick

MariaDB is a drop-in for MySQL, so anything written for MySQL works with it: mysql2, Prisma, Sequelize, TypeORM and most bot frameworks that store data.

PostgreSQL is the one to choose if you are starting fresh and have no preference. It works with pg, Prisma, Drizzle, asyncpg and SQLAlchemy. An empty PostgreSQL database starts out using a few megabytes of its quota, because every new one is a copy of a template.

Versions, and changing them

Each type is offered in the recommended version, which is the newest we run, and usually an older one for code that is not ready for it. You can move a database between them yourself at any time from the panel, and its address, username and password stay exactly the same.

A move takes the database offline for about a minute while it is copied and checked. The copy it was moved from is kept as a backup for 7 days, and you can restore it from the panel if something does not work on the new version.

When a version is retired, we email you well before the date, and anything still on it by then is moved to the recommended version for you, with the same backup kept afterwards.

Fair use

Each database allows 5 connections at a time, and a single query that runs for more than 30 seconds is stopped. MariaDB databases also have an hourly limit on queries and writes, set well above what a bot or a small app does. These exist so that one busy database cannot slow down everybody else's, and the Acceptable Use Policy applies to what you store in a database just as it does to your server.

Need somewhere to run the code that uses it? Hosting comes with the same account.

FAQ

Questions

Do I need a server here to use a database?

No. Databases belong to your account, not to a server, and they accept connections from anywhere. Your project can run with us, on your own machine, or on another host entirely.

Is it actually free?

Yes. There is no paid database plan. Every account gets 2 databases of 50 MB, with no card, no trial and no expiry.

What happens when a database is full?

Writes that would take it past 50 MB fail with an error. Delete what you no longer need and it accepts writes again. Your panel shows how much of the quota each database is using.

Are my databases backed up?

No, apart from the copy kept for 7 days after a version move. Keep your own backups with mysqldump or pg_dump, as you would for anything that matters.

Can I change the password?

Yes, from the panel at any time. Anything using the old password stops connecting until you give it the new one.
